SLP 203 : Augmentative and Alternate Communication

This course introduces students to the principles and practices of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems used by individuals with complex communication needs. Students will explore the types, components, and selection criteria of AAC systems, ranging from low-tech to high-tech solutions. The course emphasizes the role of the SLPA in implementing AAC under the supervision of a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP), including supporting communication, training users and caregivers, and maintaining AAC devices. Ethical considerations, cultural responsiveness, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams will also be addressed.
