At a Glance
Students enrolled in the Advanced Automotive Technology program gain comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in diagnosing, servicing, and repairing modern automotive systems. The program combines classroom instruction with hands-on laboratory experience, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world service scenarios. By the completion of the program, students are prepared to utilize modern diagnostic equipment, interpret technical service information, and perform professional-level vehicle maintenance and repairs consistent with current industry standards.
Program Description
The Advanced Automotive Technology program prepares students for careers in the automotive service and repair industry through hands-on training and industry-relevant coursework. Students develop skills in vehicle diagnostics, engine performance, electrical systems, undercar systems, and emerging technologies such as electric vehicles. The program offers multiple stackable short-term certificates that allow students to gain specialized skills and enter the workforce quickly while continuing their education. These certificates apply toward both the Automotive Technology Certificate and the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree, providing flexible pathways for career advancement in the automotive field.
Program Expectations
Students are exposed to the industry requirements of today’s automotive service technicians. This means, that in addition to the curriculum requirements, students will develop professional skills and processes used by today’s highly successful technicians. Students must be prepared to invest time and effort into their education and training. The program focuses on producing confident, qualified graduates for employment in fast-paced, late-model technology, vehicle repair facilities.
Career Path
Graduates of the Advanced Automotive Technology program are prepared for employment in a wide range of automotive service environments, including quick-service maintenance facilities, independent full-service repair shops, new vehicle franchise dealerships, and governmental and municipal fleet maintenance departments. Graduates may also pursue self-employment through independent automotive repair businesses or specialty service operations.
The automotive industry continues to experience a significant demand for highly trained technicians. Employers consistently report difficulty recruiting qualified individuals who possess the technical knowledge and diagnostic skills required to service modern vehicles. The increasing complexity of automotive systems, including advanced electronics, computerized engine controls, and electric vehicle technologies—has created a need for technicians with formal training in mechanical systems, electronic diagnostics, and computer-controlled vehicle systems.
The Advanced Automotive Technology program addresses these workforce needs by providing students with hands-on training and technical instruction aligned with current industry standards. Graduates develop the diagnostic, troubleshooting, and repair skills necessary to maintain and service today’s increasingly sophisticated vehicles.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for automotive service technicians and mechanics was $49,6770 in May 2024, with opportunities for higher earnings based on advanced training, industry certifications, experience, and specialization. As vehicle technology continues to evolve, technicians with postsecondary education and technical training are expected to remain highly competitive in the workforce.
NOTE: The Advanced Automotive Technology Department will limit acceptance of automobiles for repair under the following terms: 1) vehicles must be within the last ten model years; 2) vehicles must be owned by currently enrolled students, faculty, staff or employees; 3) repairs to the vehicle must relate to the courses being taught during the semester; 4) ALL COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE VEHICLE REPAIR MUST BE PAID IN FULL BEFORE REGAINING POSSESSION OF THE VEHICLE.

This course covers basic instruction in manual and automatic transmissions and transaxles. Emphasis is placed on the understanding and application of basic internal and external operation relating to proper operation and driveability. Instruction includes the principles and powerflow of automatic transmissions and repairing or replacing internal and external components.

This course is designed to measure a technician's knowledge of the skills needed to diagnose both high and low voltage electrical/electronic problems, as well as other supporting system problems on hybrid/electric vehicles. This course prepares students fo the ASE Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Specialist (L3) certification.

3AUM 260 : Light Duty Diesel
AUM 260 is designed to provide theory of operation and diagnosis of light-duty diesel engines, with an emphasis on Duramax, Cummins, and Powerstroke platforms. Specific topics include theory, operation and diagnosis of fuel, air induction, and exhaust (Including after treatment) systems incorporated into these powertrains. This is an advanced level course. Prerequisite knowledge of general engine diagnosis, cylinder heads/valve trains, engine blocks, and lubrication/cooling systems are required. Proficiency in interpreting circuit wiring diagrams, electrical circuit testing with a digital multimeter, and/or oscilloscope is also required.

3AUM 281 : Special Topics
These courses are designed to allow the student to specialize in a particular area of study with minimum instruction in automotive mechanics application and with evaluation at the instructor's discretion. Emphasis is placed on a topic/project that the student is interested in and may include any automotive or related area in automotive mechanics. Upon completion, the student should be able to work with minimum instruction and execute the necessary techniques to finish a live work project of their choice.
